Do we need yet another mixed-reality headset?
The headset is expected to launch during WWDC 2023
During the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2023 (June 5-9), Apple is expected to show the world its new product: a mixed reality (augmented/virtual) headset. The product is still a mystery, but experts claim that it will have a battery connected to a cable that will not stay in the device and will not have anything extraordinary but will try to get users to experience using existing features with a new approach.
Then I ask? Did you really need a new device like that? Don't we already have enough examples of others who failed miserably after so much hype and fanfare?
I think the answer is no, we don't. Until now, Augmented/Virtual Reality has had much more advertising power than usefulness. Logically, there are times when another function stands out, which is helpful for some work. However, it is not a product for the masses because everyone is unnecessary. In this case, I would say there is no need for almost anyone to have such a product.
This is the type of product that I was never interested in buying. I'm passionate about technology, but the usefulness of augmented/virtual reality hasn't messed with my head. Some games quickly become monotonous, and some features are specific to some branches of work (perhaps engineering or architecture). Besides, I don't see this far, anything else.
But what exactly do the leaks say about Apple's headset? According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, one of the top Apple product analysts, in his most recent "Power On" newsletter, Apple's idea is to make various good apps available and try to capture users with some of them.
Among the highlights are the following:
- iPad apps are running in mixed reality (most of them). No need, as you can do this more conveniently on the iPad, which has a 10-hour battery life.
- Wellness app focused on meditation. The idea is to use sound and image resources to engage the user. The problem is that the headset's battery life is short.
- New portal to watch games. I see no less need for very high-quality TVs on the market.
- Focus on games. With short battery life? It will be a resounding failure.
- Videoconferencing and meeting rooms with avatars. That might be interesting. But again, the short battery life can be an issue.
- New fitness tool. The risk of an accident when you exercise with this headset with a cable connected to a battery in your pocket is excellent.
- Operation of the headset manually, visually and via Siri. Siri doesn't even work for the basics. Imagine that headset.
The cost has not been made official, but there is much discussion that it should cost upwards of $3,000. It's the niche of the niche. Let's follow. WWDC 2023 takes place from June 5th to 9th.
